Chinese Domain Scam?
I think I’m probably right in guessing this guy is trying to scam me into buying “my” brand in dot-cn. The email has full phone and email contact details, giving it an air of legitimacy.
But it is trying to sell me the .cn version of a .com domain, namely computerwire.com, of which I am not and never have been the registrant. I merely have an email address @computerwire.com.
Dear manager:
This is Shanghai JinYue Network Technological Inc , which is the oversea domain name register center in China authorized by our government . On 30th July. we received KINGSAN Investment company’s application, they want to register “computerwire” as Internet Brand and CN domain name. But after checking I find this domain name conflict with your company , so I send you email ,and want to confirm whether your company have authorized KINGSAN to register or not .
I’m looking forward to hearing from you!John Zhou

If this any indication of their intent: I received a similar message from another (similar) company regarding registration for .cn, .com.cn, .net.cn, .org.cn, etc. The very same idea as your note above. So, I registered the .cn from a different registrar with a much lower price. To this day they haven’t registered any of the other *.cn extensions.
I would say this is more of an agressive marketing tactic than a scam, but I didn’t send them any money of course.

One man’s aggressive marketing tactic is another man’s scam.

I just got this same email, I’m wondering if either of you tried calling the phone number? Or emailing this person?
I ask because the “investment company” has absolutely no conflict in content with that of my client.
Though I am happy I found this posting! It’s been very helpful.
23 August 2007 @ 6:55 pm
Thanks for the alert! I appreciate that you put this online so I could stumble across it and be aware of yet another potential scam.
24 August 2007 @ 5:12 am
Thanks for posting this! I received a similar E-mail, but from a different company. I figured it was a scam or “aggressive marketing” of these .cn urls. I’ve got an E-mail into godaddy about their take on it.
It’s a scam if they have actually had no attempts to purchase the URLs, which would be my guess. If they have, I guess it’s extortion? Why would they be checking? Seems like it would all be up for grabs…. China is not exactly famous for their stringent copyright protection….
At this rate, we could all go broke trying to protect against all the possibilities that might eventually come up as new economies jump onto to the internet.
28 August 2007 @ 5:16 pm
This is propagating like crazy. Luckily we don’t need the kind of customers who can’t find us on .com, thanks. (Of course I’m sure I’d feel differently if we were trying to export something like branded rice to China). But actions like these really devalue the .CN brand globally … don’t you think?
29 October 2007 @ 9:54 am
The scam, or aggressive marketing ploy if you like, is still propagating. My compnay has received TWO almost identical messages regarding variations of .CN domains from two companies in China. If you compare their websites, they are 100% identical in wording, justdifferent banners and graphics. http://www.nianbang.com/ and http://www.cndomainnames.org.cn/
25 November 2007 @ 9:52 am
We’ve received the same scam. They tailor the email message slightly using keywords from your website to make it better apply to your business. The internet address at the bottom is different on our email. ( http://www.govisp.cn )
(and the address in your original blog post http://www.cniigov.cn seems to be gone)
We’re ignoring it.
26 November 2007 @ 1:53 am
We’ve received two in the last week or so, similar to each other. Thing is, the company I work for has a joint venture in China – and a disgruntled ex employee there. But I still think this is a Chinese version of the old scam to get you to needlessly register domains.
I found one other reference to “Huaxin Holdings” (the organisation supposedly trying to register “our” domains) on another bb – another person asking “is this email legit?” The texts of our emails were identical except for our company names. url: http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=1292049

We have just received two of these emails also and I’m going to ignore them. They are just a modern take on the old “Domain Name of America” that used to go around but theirs was an actual letter whereas this is spam.
Also worth looking at is who received the email in your organistaion. Our two letters were received by two people who also receive a lot of spam and didn’t goto anyone who actually works in IT.

The funny thing is the site doesn’t even post that I can find what their price is for .cn domain registrations.
This email was not sent to the admin. contact email of our domain, but only the email address on the site, which makes it clear that it is not legitimate.
If someone really was interested in registering this trademark in China, it would only make sence that they would check the .com version and if available for sale, at least enter into negotiations to purchase it as well. As someone above mentioned China is NOT particularly notorious for their respect of copywrite laws.

Hello
We are Shanghai NIC Internet Service Co.,Ltd, an oversea domain name registration organization. On May. 07th 2008, we received the Aiffida Investment company’s application that they want to register the “xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx” as their CN domain name and the Internet Brand. It’s our duty to tell you this matter in order to avoid the unnecessary Intellectual Property dispute .We want to confirm whether you have authorized the company to register. If you haven’t, please let me know whether you need to protect your domain name and the Internet Brand or not. According to the register principle, the original owner of the trademark has the priority to register. The priority time is 5-7 workdays, if your company give up the priority, we will accept the Aiffida company’s register request and help the company register after the time is over.

Looks like Dylan gets around. Luckily, I just responded with a message saying that Aiffida is not authorized, then did some shopping to see what a .CN would cost me. For what it is worth, found a site selling registration for a few dollars a year (innter.net) ..
but I digress … Thank you for the heads up, if/when they respond, I’ll just ignore them.
I am not a lawyer, but my opinion is to cancel any credit card you gave them and tell credit card company not to authorize any payments in future .. in writing, then ignore all messages from them. No government official in China is going to spend any time on this, so the crooks will move on to somebody else who doesn’t know better.

The company “trying” to register our domains, is called “TJ Skymer, inc”. If you google it, you will only find a poor high school wrestler from NJ with that name.
The phone number used in our mail, is the same number in many different scams posted on this blog. Funny thing is: the company’s name has changed and their website disappeared…

Best advice: Written complaint to ICANN….I have made a formal complaint……..
Details to lodge a complaint:
http://reports.internic.net/cgi/registrars/problem-report.cgi
Include a copy/paste of all correspondence.
Each individual domain who contacted you should be out of business in no time.
What they are doing is illegal, no matter what country they reside in.
ICANN has the power to close these outlets down.
The email I received was from:
Sophia Wu
Shanghai ShiShun Information Technology Co.,Ltd.
Tel:+86-0513-8011 8536
Fax:+86-0513-8011 8539
Email:sophia@registryid.com
WebSite:www.registryid.com
I confronted her about the business name they used who was wanting to buy related domains to ours…Merry Investment Company…it does not exist…
Do everyone a favour and spend two minutes and make the complaint to ICANN.
The power of many will work.
Good luck. Mark.

My first thought was that this was just a scam, but I received several more emails and finally got a phone call from China. Oh-oh! Could this be real? While I was worrying over this, I received another email from a different company with similar wording, but about another domain name I own. Red flag!
A Google search on “Trademark Scams” turned up lots of these kind of things. A quick call to my attorney put my mind at ease. This is not how trademarking works. So beware and don’t fall for this scam.

[...] Have you noticed how messages opening with “I am” or “We are” almost invariably are junk? This specimen was received from the IP address 218.188.65.53, allocated to “Hutchison Global Communications” in Hong Kong. Lots of similar stunts have been reported elsewhere, for example on Kevin Murphy’s blog, texturbation. [...]

I am thrilled that I came upon this website. Here’s an e-mail we got. It is from a CHNRegistry company, which also says that it does business under the names “Shanghai Shi Shun Information Technology Co., Ltd.” (like the post on September 8th) and “Shi Shun Co Ltd..”
I work for a United States investment company, and we were about to wire them our registration fee for several domain names the company said we should register to protect our intellectual property. We became concerned about paying for the domain names when the wire instructions listed FIVE intermediary banks through which we should send the wire, the beneficiary name was different from the company who was purportedly contacting us, and the telephone number listed in the e-mail footer of Mr. Sun as well as on http://www.chnregistry.com didn’t go through.
Thank you all for taking the time to post your experience and saving our company from potentially being used as a conduit for money laundering. We are posting this here in that hope that others can similarly be saved from being scammed as well.
PLEASE NOTE: I removed our company name in the e-mail and replaced it with “XXXX” because I would prefer to keep our company name anonymous.

Here is another Hong Kong Network Service Company email directed at a company in Australia. Looks like they must be making money out of it as they continue to send the spam.
What impresses me is the post from ‘julia’ above that tries to promote one of these offerings with a Chin-glish testimonial” they help our company protect the Intellectual Property on the Internet”

Maybe I should try registering with another domain name provider for cheaper. Just shows they must have realised how much potential my site has
Or maybe he just wants to know if my company name is trademarked, to build up a database for another scam. Should I really have registered my name with every domain. But what if they keep inventing new extensions. Is this what other serious companies do? I wish I knew about law or had a lawyer …” etc, etc etc.
Fortunately common sense prevailed in the morning I Googled a phrase and came upon this and a few other sites
So I’m obviously going to do nothing now. But even if you don’t fall for the scam it certainly embeds in your head the idea of registering a chinese domain, and I would guess quite a percentage of people would go ahead and register one or two.
I think the most convincing aspect was that the email was sent to my working site email – not the one usually associated with my site for administrative stuff. So it looked to me someone had actually visited my site and found my correct contact email.
This is the letter:

Cheers for posting these, very helpful. Here’s one that got sent to our company today just in case it’s any use to anyone -
Dear CEO&Principal, We are a professional Internet consultant organization in Asia, which mainly deal with the global companies’ domain name registration and internet intellectual property right protection. Currently, we have a pretty important issue needing to confirm with your company.
On Nov 25, 2008, we received an application formally, one company named “Young Holdings Ltd” wanted to applied for the internet brand “xxxx” and some domain names through our body.
During our preliminary investigation, we found that these domain names’ keyword and internet brand is identical with your trademark. I wonder whether you consigned Young Holdings Ltd to register these domain names through us or not? Or is Young Holdings Ltd your business partner or distributor in Asia? Currently, we have postponed this application of this company temporarily already. In order to deal with this issue better, please let the principal make a confirmation with me by telephone or email ASAP.

Gary

Hello,
Our company has fallen for such a trick in 2007. We received a mail from the JinYue company, as mentioned in the first post.
We registered the domain for 5 years, at this JinYue company.
Now I want to move this domain to a safer registrar, but there is no way I can contact them. I need an authorisation code and an unlock of the domain. Does anyone know how I can arrange this. It seems that the company doesn’t exist (anymore).
Thanks for your answers!

If like that, we will finish this company’s application. If this company is not your partner or distributor in China, hope you can contact us in time so that we can deal with this matter better.
Looking forward to your reply.
Kind regards
Stephen Liu

We also got the same kind of request from a company named Hanshin, they want to use Awantel for their chinese domain.
Strange they are looking for old established domains.

We received this today (July 6, 2010) – and it is very similar to the one from Aaron above. We also believe it to be a scame – and believe it to be “triggered” by our doing a WHOIS on our .net site. The .net sit ehas been parked for a year, but was activated last month as a redirect to our .com site.
Thank you for the opportunity you have provided for us to share this with others.

Wow – Three years later and this scam is still going strong, with pretty much the same wording as the original post. I just got one of these emails on Jul 22, 2010. Ignoring.

The Wangs and Lius certainly abound, don’t they? Must all be members of the same family whose parents have a penchant for Western first names LOL.
Seriously, though…. I’m very glad I found this site and thanks for all the laughs reading the above. I have deleted my message from Nancy Wan, Senior Consultant of “the Department of Registration Service in China”.
